I earned my undergraduate degrees in Zoology and Art from the University of Washington in 1983. I then followed that with a Masters of Science in Medical Illustration from the Medical College of Georgia in 1985. Since 1986 I have been freelancing in the fields of medical illustration, technical illustration, page layout, and graphic design from my location in Oregon. Initially, all of my clients were located in Portland, Oregon, but the advent of online communication and distribution of my art has allowed me to work with doctors as far away as London. I have built three decades of expertise as a visual communicator. This depth of experience has sharpened my skills in creating visuals that communicate important and sometimes complex scientific concepts in a clear, direct style. My greatest areas of expertise are in the publishing area, having created visuals for many textbooks and patient education materials. I also have valuable experience in creating illustrations for medical-legal use. In the earliest years my career, my work was completed using traditional techniques such as watercolor and pen and ink. Since about 1989 I have been using digital tools for all of my illustration work. I have logged countless hours using Adobe software, such as Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign and I would consider myself an expert user of these tools. Clients who I have had the privilege of serving have found me to be trustworthy, both in the details of the information conveyed in my work and in my communications with the people that I am working with.
