Artist Name

Springer Science & Business Media needed an angiogram of an animal heart for a book cover. We contacted F. D. Giddings, an illustrator represented by Phototake, and he came up with this realistic rendition of a pig heart as it would appear on an angiogram. He tinted the heart in magenta hues, contrasted by golden coronary arteries. The client was delighted with the results.

medical illustration of Illustration of the reward pathway of the brain, which is indispensable to human survival because it associates the execution of vital functions with strong sensations of satisfaction, pleasure, and happiness.
medical illustration of This scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicted a number of red blood cells found enmeshed in a fibrinous matrix on the luminal surface of an indwelling vascular catheter, mag. 7766x.
medical illustration of SEM. Syncephalastrum racemosum is a filamentous fungus that causes human pathogen, mag. 105x (at 24 x 36 mm). It can cause nail disease (especially in damaged nails) along with other human diseases such as: zygomycosis, cutaneous infections and otomycosis. The genus Syncephalastrum is commonly isolated from soil and animal feces, especially in tropical and subtropical areas.

medical illustration of SEM of Northern black widow spider - male (Latrodectus variolus). Latrodectus variolus is a venomous spider found throughout the eastern US, from southern Canada to Florida, and west to eastern Texas. The female has the typical black widow red hourglass- shape mark on the underside of her abdomen. The marking is incomplete or split in the middle.
medical illustration of Obstetrical ultrasound study of a 24 year old female primiparous (pregnant for the first time) patient who is 6 months 2 weeks pregnant. The 2D ultrasound shows a right profile view of the neck, head and right arm of a normal fetus.

medical illustration of Stylized illustration of strands of human DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid.
medical illustration of Herpes simplex virus (HSV). HSV causes cold sores and genital herpes. Image produced using high-dynamic-range imaging (HDRI) from an image taken with transmission electron microscopy. Viral diameter around 200 nm.
medical illustration of Illustration collage depicting the role of oxytocin in causing uterine contractions. Elevated estrogen levels in late pregnancy trigger the synthesis of prooxyphysin in hypothalamic nuclei. This leads to the release of oxytocin from the posterior pituitary. It is also synthesized in the placenta. There is a subsequent increase in the display of oxytocin receptors in the deciduas and myometrium of the uterine wall.
medical illustration of Scanning electron micrograph of a cancer cell (red) being attacked by T-lymphocytes (yellow). The cancer cell is from a patient with kidney and liver cancer and the lymphocytes are type O tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL).

medical illustration of Medical illustration showing man with a migraine headache.
medical illustration of Medical illustration of a cesarean section.
medical illustration of Baby boy minutes after birth.
medical illustration of Medical illustration of the central and autonomic nervous systems, seen in a female figure, sagittal view. Shown here are the central nervous system (yellow) and the autonomic (involuntary) nervous system, which is split into sympathetic (red) and parasympathetic (blue) divisions.
medical illustration of Ophthalmology. Red eye. Acute inflammation and redness of the conjunctiva of the right eye in a 36 year old woman with red eye resulting from a corneal abrasion.

medical illustration of SEM photocomposite of Staphylococcus aureus on the surface of the small intestine, mag. 800x, bacteria; 49x, intestine (at 24 x 36 mm). S. aureus is a gram-positive, methicillin-resistant, coccus prokaryote. S. aureus in humans can cause food poisoning, toxic shock syndrome, and skin and wound infections such as scalded skin syndrome, scarlet fever, erysipelas and impetigo.
medical illustration of A small bowel surgical anastomosis using a Covidien linear cutter.
medical illustration of Illustration. Researchers are experimenting with the use of very thin nanofibers to mimic blood vessels and nerves, which are the normal pathways for the spread of glioblastoma cancer in the brain. The hope is to redirect the glioblastoma cancer cells along the fibers to a toxic gel, which destroys them, or to another part of the body where they are more easily operable.
