Interpretation of Hemoglobin S polymerization. A genetic mutation causes the production of hemoglobin S (Hb S). When deoxygenated, Hb S has the ability to polymerize into rigid rods which reshape the erythrocyte. The sickle shaped erythrocyte is much less flexible, which leads to hemolysis, increased viscosity and acute vaso-occlusive episodes.
