The Pilar Apparatus

medical illustration of This 3D bioscape features a very common STD known as trichomoniasis that is caused by the single-celled parasitic organism Trichomonas vaginalis.
The organism has a pear-shaped trophozoite form when not in contact with male or female urogential tract epithelium, but once it touches a host cell it assumes a closely-applied amoeboid form that is cytotoxic, causing inflammation and host tissue damage.
The 'frothy' exudate spilling over the epithelial cells is characteristic of trichomoniasis.
Next medical illustration of The purpose of this illustration was to show one potentially serious consequence of atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation creates turbulence in the heart that may result in thrombus (blood clot) formation. The thrombus can then travel to the brain where it may block a blood vessel causing oxygen starvation and tissue death. This is known as an ischemic stroke.
