medical illustration of Skin cross section showing the stages of wound healing. A moist bandage is placed over a scrape. A blood clot and inflammation is seen. New tissue forms at the edges, and eventually the wound heals. This technique of keeping the injury covered and moist is believed to lessen the chance of scarring.
Next medical illustration of In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedure involving retrieving an egg from the woman's ovary and allowing sperm to fertilize it in a lab setting. When male infertility is an issue, intracytoplasmic sperm injection is used to ensure fertilization. The mature oocyte is held by a pipette and the sperm is injected directly into it. The fertilized egg (zygote) divides to become a morula, then a blastocyst, and finally an embryo.
