This animation was made to introduce cardiac surgeons and other stakeholders to the HeartWare System, its use and key technological advantages. It was important to clearly illustrate the pump’s proprietary suspension system, which eliminates wear. To focus viewer attention, we rendered the system and heart photorealistically and used a simpler illustrative style for supporting elements.

Full page illustration created for the article "The Brain, ReImagined" by Douglas Fox in Scientific American 318, 60 – 67.
The article described two theories of nerve signal propagation. This piece draws the viewer in with a charismatic neuron, and illustrates the two theories in parallel, allowing the viewers to easily compare & contrast.
Simplified models were used for the ion channels, so that excess visual complexity didn't add to the high cognitive load required to interpret the piece.

Copper isotopes behave differently in near-surface environments than in non-weathering environments found deeper in the earth. By sampling copper isotopes (63 and 65) in metal artifacts from Copper and Bronze Age Serbia, Dr. Mathur and his colleagues discovered the approximate time that people of this region were introduced to shaft mining, a technique already in practice in the middle east.
Soon to be published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

The assignment was to create cover art that incorporated different factors that could result in PTSD, as discussed in the manuscript. Photographs I had taken were combined and edited in Photoshop with public domain images. I.e. The child was photographed in his father's arms and then placed into a photo taken of the fireman, and the background added. Once the composite was approved, outlines, shadows, and highlights were added to create the final effect.
