Two related diagrams depicting events at the synaptic cleft. The first shows how an activated G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) interacts with its G-protein to inhibit vesicle fusion and neurotransmitter release at the presynaptic surface of a neuronal terminal button. The second shows how, when the GPCR is not activated, presynaptic vesicle fusion is possible and neurotransmitter is released into the synaptic cleft; initiating a cascade of events. These images were created in Adobe Illustrator.

This painting was created for the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators exhibit for the 2018 conference. Left is an adult Eastern Screech Owl (gray morph) and right is the fledgling. I worked in a traditional realism style using a mix of acrylic and colored pencil. The branches feature greenshield lichen, native to Connecticut where I worked on this illustration.
