Royoporus badius, also known as Polyporus badius, is among the more colorful polypores to be found on decaying hardwood logs, helping to decompose the wood. Very tiny pores are shown in the detail of the underside of the cutting. This fungus is found across the North American continent in spring and fall in the cooler latitudes. Stereum hirsutum is included in a group of shelf mushrooms that tend to grow together laterally. It manifests in a wide range of colors and is shown here in reddish orange and brown tones. Its striped patterns are reminiscent of the Turkeytail mushroom. This grouping was painted with transparent watercolors on Arches paper and used for a project with a private client.
