In posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) procedures, surgeons have the option to access pedicle screw insertion sites by dissecting down the intermuscular plane between the multifidus medially and the longissimus laterally. Placing screws and fusion rods in this plane spares the neurovascular bundle to the multifidus muscle and reduces postoperative bone loss.
