Ponds are relatively shallow, with considerable light penetration. In standing-water ecosystems there is little flowing of water, and organisms in standing-water ponds or lakes are accustomed to it. The animal inhabitants must possess considerable physiological adaptability to survive. Lakes and ponds biomes host fish, waterfowl, algae, crustaceans and microorganisms, there are a variety of rooted aquatic plants.
