Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped, facultative anaerobic bacterium that is widespread in the gastrointestinal tract of many animals. Although most of this microorganisms are harmless inhabitants of the intestinal flora, there are some pathogenic strains that can cause severe illness in humans.
