Optogenetic systems are novel research tools that allow the regulation of neuronal activity. They use engineered photoreceptor proteins that change gene expression upon a light stimulus. They are bound to chromosomes and directly manipulate the genetic function of targeted cells, allowing rapid manipulation of gene function.
