Temporary radioactive seed loadings are introduced into the prostate gland by carefully placed needles enabling the dose cloud to conform the radiation dose to the size and shape of the tumor target. The technique takes advantage of the inverse square law (the intensity of radiation is reduced by the square of the distance from the source) since the sources are placed in the target area, limiting side effects and sparing surrounding anatomy.
