Myelofibrosis is one of the rarer type of blood cancer where scar tissue, called "fibrosis" is building up inside the bone marrow. As the scar tissue is taking away increasingly more space the bone marrow can not make enough healthy blood cells anymore. In this shot we illustrated this mechanism for a MoA animation for a drug counteracting this.

Contemplating the respiratory ravages of severe acute respiratory syndrome from SARS-CoV-2, lung epithelial cells are portrayed as a planetary landscape immersed in a cyanotic, watery underworld. Viral budding from the plasma membrane of lung epithelial cells enables coronaviruses to exit the host cell after infection and replication. This initiates a cytokine storm, a sudden over-response all at once from an immune system gone awry, producing an inflammatory response flaring out of control.

Thrombopoietin (TPO) is a protein produced primarily in the liver that controls how many platelets are made. In people with chronic Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia (ITP) there usually isn't enough TPO (orange) reaching the bone marrow when platelet levels get low. TPO Receptor Agonist (green) works by stimulating megakaryocytes and their precursors in the bone marrow, leading to proliferation and differentiation of these cells.

A Cytotoxic Killer TCell induces a cancer cell to undergo programmed cell death known as apoptosis. These Killer TCells are programmed to seek out, attach themselves and kill cancer cells, usually using chemicals. They recognize a specific site (antigen) on the surface of cancer cells and bind to it. The Killer T Cell then eliminates the cancer cell by releasing a protein that forms pores in the cancer cell's membrane and specifically induces apoptosis.

COX-2 selective NSAIDs were developed to maintain analgesia efficacy while minimizing the side effects associated with COX-1 inhibition. The cyclooxygenase enzyme is anchored to the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. Above it, released prostaglandin hormones soar into the cell. The COX-2 selective NSAID is blocked from the channel of access for COX-1, but gains entry at COX-2 site, and thereby inhibits the active site for pain prostaglandin creation.

APC Dendritic Cells play a critical role initiating tumor destruction by activating T Cells. Tumor cells produce antigens that are captured by antigen presenting cells (APCs). Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (RTKs) are high-affinity cell surface receptors for cell maintenance but also initiate the development of many cancers. RTK occurs when a ligand attaches to the HER 2 receptor and then connects to the HER 3 receptor, signaling intracellular proteins to initiate cell division. Here, the ligand attaches to the HER 3 receptor but the anti-tumor drug (sphere at base of the receptor) prevents the joining of HER 3 and HER 2, resulting in membrane destruction and cell death.

Each coronavirus spike protein is a group of three identical proteins that help the virus infect host cells. The spikes are embedded in a lipid bilayer. The outer membrane is made up of membrane proteins, with a few envelope proteins interspersed between them. Inside, nucleoproteins help organize and protect the virus's RNA. The host cell translates viral RNA into new viral proteins, some of which are assembled into new copies of the virus that continue the cycle by infecting other cells.

APC Dendritic Cells play a critical role initiating tumor destruction by activating T Cells. Tumor cells produce antigens that are captured by antigen presenting cells (APCs). The APCs that activate T-Cells are usually dendritic cells because T Cells cannot recognize or respond to free or soluble antigens but they can recognize and respond to antigens that have been processed and presented by APC dendritic cells.

Skeleton in bony environment showing osteoclasts (which absorb bone tissue) being attacked by zolendronic acid, a bisphosphonate intravenous drug used in the treatment of bone diseases like osteoporosis. Name brands of this drug include Reclast and Aclasta. White women are at higher risk of this disease, particularly after menopause due to decreased levels of estrogen.

Male figure including the liver, gallbladder, duodenum, and spleen, and highlighting the pancreas. The pancreas is sectioned to show the pancreatic ducts and vessels. A histological section is included to show the islets of Langerhans, the beta cells of which produce insulin, which is shown in molecular form. Insulin along with glucagon are hormones which regulate blood glucose levels. Insulin deficiency can result in diabetes. Hypoglycemia is an overproduction of insulin.

A fetus with a heart monitor electrode attached to the scalp. The wire is inserted through the vagina, past the cervix and into the uterus. The heartbeat of the baby is heard on the monitor and is recorded on a printed chart. This is done to see if the stress of labor is affecting the baby's health and to check the uterine contractions.

Surgical procedure showing aortic valve replacement using a Portico valve with a stent frame. Used in patients with aortic stenosis. A cross section of the heart is shown with a focus on the ascending aorta between the atria. A catheter is advanced into the left ventricle. The transcatheter heart valve is unsheathed and can be repositioned if necessary. This feature reduces the risk of embolization, coronary obstruction and atrioventricular block.

Allergic reaction stages of the skin condition known as atopic dermatitis. Once there is a skin barrier dysfunction, the immune system is activated and reacts by producing cytokines that lead to inflammation and itch. In the acute and chronic phases, there are notable changes in the cell structure of the epidermis.

Intraocular lens (IOLs) are implanted to treat cataracts or nearsightedness. In this case, a Phakic IOL with two haptics is placed behind the cornea over the iris for correcting myopia, so it's considered an alternative to LASIK or PRK eye surgery. This clear implantable lens corrects vision without replacing the eye's natural lens, as opposed to IOLs used to treat cataracts, where the IOL is implanted behind the iris after the natural cloudy lens is removed.

Diagram showing the synapse between two neurons (or nerve cells) during excitotoxicity. Excessive amounts of glutamate, a neurotransmitter, is being released from the axon terminal of the presynaptic neuron into the synaptic cleft. The receptors become overactivated, allowing high levels of calcium to enter the neuron, which activates enzymes to damage cell structures like the calcium pump. Excitotoxicity may be involved in CNS injuries and neurological diseases.
