Emmanuelle Charpentier explored a mysterious bacterial mechanism, which protects bacteria from bacteriophages. This led her to discover the gene editing mechanism of CRISPR/Cas9 in Streptococcus pyogenes a bacterium known to cause bronchitis in humans. Only a few years later scientific publications are full with new and innovative applications of gene editing and almost every lab around the world uses gene editing now, exploring applications to tackle genetic diseases.
