In this piece, Fiona Martin shares conflicting theories about why the historic Cannery Row sardine fishery collapsed—overfishing versus decadal climate change. “Trompé l’oiel” means “eye deceiver.” It is painted with close attention to details and shadows to make the objects appear as if they are real. Fiona knows the elements are working when she's tempted to pick up or brush away something she's just painted. Acrylic and mixed media on illustration board.
