Next medical illustration of The purpose of this illustration was to show one potentially serious consequence of atrial fibrillation.  Atrial fibrillation creates turbulence in the heart that may result in thrombus (blood clot) formation. The thrombus can then travel to the brain where it may block a blood vessel causing oxygen starvation and tissue death. This is known as an ischemic stroke.
