The story depicted here takes place in a bone marrow cavity within cancellous bone. It shows one of the leading theories regarding how specialized cells called megakaryocytes produce platelets. Two megakaryocytes have extended pseudopods into the interior of a sinusoidal capillary. The granular swellings along the lengths of the pseudopods are platelets-to-be. Within the capillary these swellings break off through a budding process to become free platelets.
