This image was created for the cover of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. It shows how epsilon toxin molecules released from Clostridium perfringens strain B/D in the gut microbiome assemble into pores in the endothelial cells of blood-brain-barrier capillaries disrupting the integrity of the BBB. This disruption allows the infiltration of myelin autoreactive CD4+ T cells into the brain parenchyma, leading to the demyelination of neurons.
