LH-stimulated changes in capillary growth and leukocyte delivery in the ovulatory follicle. Immune cells are present in the ovarian vasculature and theca interna of the preovulatory follicle (top). New vessels and breakdown of the granulosa cell basal lamina provide points of entry for circulating leukocytes (center). Additional leukocytes are seen in the granulosa cell layer prior to ovulation (bottom). Leukocyte-secreted chemokines and cytokines increase as ovulation approaches.
