Axons consist of neurofilaments (in green) and microtubules (in red). Neurofilaments set the axon diameter and, in interaction with myelin in myelinated axons, co-determine g ratio. Microtubules provide the structural foundation for axonal transport; in this illustration, a motor protein (kinesin-1) moves a cargo in the anterograde direction, from the cell body to the presynaptic terminal.
